Dia numero uno.

---
-- oigo me nombre.

----------------------------------------

My first day begins with a bang! On the way from New York to Guatemala City, I meet a man who is from Guatemala City, but who works in New York now. He gives lots of advice about Guatemala, gives me his telephone number, and even gives me a Friendship Bracelet. When I arrive at the airport in the city, almost immediately Gloria and Hiu-Fai see me, and we leave together. I look after the luggage while the girls use the bathroom -- when suddenly -- I hear my name. Luisa and Regina, two students from the Universidad Francisco Marroquin, are there no pick us up and drive us to the Centro de Emergencia por Maternales y Infantales (CEMI), where we are to live. I go with Regina, and we are lost before a half hour is up...but we arrive at CEMI soon enough. Then, Regina brings me to the central market, where she gives me a gift of four avocados (which cost two quetzals, which is like 25 cents). Also, I change dollars for quetzals, and I buy black beans and tomatoes.
---
As soon as we get back to CEMI again, I meet Mario, another student, and he asks me for help -- he needs to attend to three pregnancies, and there is also a man with bleeding from his head.
---
He tells me to attend to the man...so I enter his room and introduce myself, but the man is really drunk! Apparently, he drank seven shots of pure alcohol, and then he fell and hit his head against the ground. In the room, the nurse was incredibly helpful, and she brought me a sterile gown, instruments for surgery, and she starts intravenous fluids. I irrigate the whole head, and then I cut the hair around the wound, but it continues to keep bleeding. I put a lot of pressure over the wound, but that causes him a lot of pain. Because of that, I inject anesthesia before proceeding. (I don't know how much he weighs, but I suppose it is less than 100 kg; so I use less than 5 ml of 2% lidocaine). Then, I sew the wound and bring him to the recovery area.
---
After the activity, I finally go to my room and unpack my things. What is there for dinner? Well, avocados and tomatoes, of course!
